There's a certain kind of pitch making the rounds in automation right now. A young company, a slick demo, a deck full of promises about revolutionary AI and next-generation robotics. The price looks aggressive. The founders make grand promises. And the technology, they assure you, will change everything.
The energy is real, and some of these companies will do great things. But a demo and a decade of dependable production are two very different achievements — and it's worth being clear-eyed about which one you're buying.
If you run a machine shop or fabrication business, you need a robot that shows up, works every shift, and is still working eight years from now. That's a different thing than a roadmap — and it's worth understanding why.
Reliability isn't a feature. It's a track record.
Anyone can claim reliability. Very few companies can point to years of it in the field.
A cobot lives or dies by its precision drivetrain — the gears at every joint that hold position, absorb load, and repeat the same motion tens of thousands of times a day without drift. Many robotics startups are strong on software talent and funding; what naturally takes longer to develop is the years of automation and production knowledge that teach you how a machine actually behaves over its full service life, how to build it so it can be serviced, and how to stand behind it when something goes wrong.

What to actually weigh before you buy
Cut through the pitch with a few plain questions:
How long has this company been shipping robots — and can they show years of field reliability, not just a spec sheet?
Where is the robot designed and built, and does the manufacturing knowledge live in the same place as the support?
Will the parts, the software, and the company itself still be here in eight years?
Are their customers coming back — or just being acquired for the first time?
Is the technology proven in production today, or promised for a release that keeps slipping?
Bottom line:
Buying a cobot is a long-term bet on the machine and the company behind it. A USA-built robot from a company with eight years of proven reliability, 99.99% gear performance, deep manufacturing and automation experience, and customers loyal enough to keep coming back is a fundamentally safer bet than a promise of what's coming next — however exciting that promise may be.
Impressive demos are easy. Showing up every shift for eight years is hard — and it's the only thing that actually matters on your floor. Buy the proven machine. Buy it from people who build things for a living. Buy American.
